"Arch-Conspirator" Veronica Roth - 2022
After her parents, Oedipus and Jocasta, are murdered, Antigone and her siblings are taken in by their militant uncle, Kreon, who claims the vacant throne. Antigone sees her new home as a "gilded cage" under her uncle's tyrannical rule. The central conflict arises when Antigone's twin brother, Polyneikes, fights against Kreon and is killed. Kreon decrees that Polyneikes is not to have his genetic material harvested and stored in the Archive, an act considered the ultimate dishonor and a punishment for his rebellion. Defying the order, Antigone attempts to retrieve her brother's genetic material herself to allow his lineage to continue. Antigone is caught and imprisoned, even as a revolution begins to brew in the streets of the city. Despite pleas from his son (and Antigone's betrothed), Haemon, Kreon's pride ultimately leads to tragedy for both himself and his family, leaving no one as a true victor in the end.
