 The story takes place in the distant future, in the last habitable city on a planet that has become a toxic wasteland. The survival of humanity depends entirely on the Archive, a state-controlled repository where the genes and "souls" of the dead are stored. This society has replaced natural childbirth with a system of reproductive control, where new lives are created by selecting genetic material from the Archive. Children conceived naturally (like the protagonist and her siblings) are seen as "soulless" and dangerous by the ruling class.
