"Frederick" Leo Lionni - 1995
This gentle animal fable follows a family of five field mice who live in an old stone wall and must work tirelessly to gather food before the harsh winter arrives. While his brothers busy themselves collecting nuts, wheat, and straw, a quiet mouse named Frederick sits still on the rocks, seemingly doing absolutely nothing to help. When questioned by the hard-working community, he explains that he is actually gathering his own supplies: warm sun rays for the cold days, vibrant colors for the gray landscape, and words for when they run out of things to say. Once winter strikes and the physical food supplies inevitably run out, the shivering mice turn to Frederick in their bleakest moment. By sharing his vivid memories of summer, he magically warms their minds and lifts their spirits, proving to his family that art, poetry, and imagination are just as essential for survival as food.
